Weather Data exchange May 2010

May Weather Data from Bill Arthur, South Perth County
Please note my HU still begin May 10. Rainfall from May 1st

Spring came early this year with the first corn planted in this area on April 15th.
It is doing well even though it got a little setback with frost May 10th.
This early planted corn has an additional 254 HU from that shown in my stats.
Virtually all corn was planted in April then it turned wet until May 19th when the
remaining corn was finished and soybean planting started in earnest.
With 11 good days after that soybeans are all planted in the area and edible beans are well started.
Locally good emergence on all crops so far but there were some areas that got heavy
rains and some rotary hoeing was done in those areas.

Much hay is off with good yields but not exceptional.
We show an average rainfall for the month but that all came in the first half so
we are glad to see some rain in the first days of June.

HU are a little above average and with the additional heat accumulated on
early corn (almost all has at least 125-150 extra HU) it is off to an early start
and at this time we would expect low drying bills this year.

May Weather Stats from Peter Stewart, S.E. Northumberland County
It is a very dry and early year. Many dairy operations have, or nearly completed
both their hay crop silage and dry hay. The crop should be high in quality, but
it is short on yields. Many of the fields have browned off and wilted.

Corn planted around April 21 is at six leaves. Most beans have emerged and advancing
rapidly. Much of the wheat has headed, but is very short and will need rain to fill.

April was dry with 28 mm of rain, compared to an average of 87 mm. This is reminiscent
of 2001 which also started off dry in April and May. Most of us remember where we went
from there, remaining below average for June and July also. That was the year softwood
trees dropped their leaves in August. Corn silage harvest was complete by the end of
August and tasseled corn reached your shoulder.

I hope we don't go there again.
