Weather Data exchange June 2010
June Weather Data from Bill Arthur, South Perth County
Please note my HU still begin May 10. Rainfall from May 1st
June 2010 will be thought of as a wet month in this area especially by those
trying to make dry hay. I recorded rain on 17 days and it was spread out enough
that the only chance to get hay off dry was around the 20th IF you cut it the
previous weekend and did not mind the couple of days of rain on it.
Finally June 29 & 30 saw lots of hay cut. Some for the first time, very over
mature, and those who took 1st cut as haylage end of May were busy with second cut.
Lots of weathered hay available in this area.
Corn and beans are off to a great start although the last of the edible beans did
not get planted until the dry spell around the 20th.
My records for HU are still based on May 10th start and are ahead of normal at
1011 but virtually all corn got an additional 150 HU at least with the early
planting. The earliest corn planted will have an additional 250 HU.
Knee high corn by 1st of July is just a memory this year as most is at least over
a metre tall some well above that.
Although most fields look great there are scattered areas that show damage from
severe storms and others that are showing the impact of mistakes in treating the
soil in the past. Compacted areas and poor drainage are showing as yellow and
stunted areas in some fields.
Wheat will probably start harvest by the 12-15th and then we will see what fusarium
is out there. Will it pay to have sprayed or not we will soon know.
So overall we are in great shape but I have to wonder how the root systems have
developed if we do turn dry?

June Weather Stats from Peter Stewart, S.E. Northumberland County
What a difference a month makes. From extremely dry to plentiful moisture this month.
We recorded 11 rain events this month. HU have kept pace. Corn is impressive.
Soys have taken off in the last week. Hay still lags, but second cut is under way
with an improved weather forecast. Wheat has improved but fusarim remains a big risk.
So maybe the old saying is true: A dry May and a wet June, the farmer sings a happy tune.
