Weather Data exchange August 2010

August Weather Data from Bill Arthur, South Perth County
Please note my HU still begin May 10. Rainfall from May 1st
August can be summarized as a near perfect month. That is for growing crops and
for nice weather to enjoy outside summer activities.
A little warm with 4 days 30 or above but no cool days just pleasant weather.
I recorded 1 mm of rain on Aug 1st and 42 mm on 8-9th so we are now dry which
is helping to rapidly mature all crops.
Lots of edible beans harvested and the rest will be ready soon. Some problems
with beans that are too dry leading to splitting.
Lots of corn silage chopped in the last few days and a few fields as long ago
as August 19th as they were drying out so early.
Talk of high moisture grain corn to start by mid Sept at the latest or it will
be too dry.
HU accumulated from May 10 show 2590 in our 2850 HU area but most corn was planted
in April and has an additional 150 HU at least and the earliest an additional
250 HU giving a 2850 HU variety suited for our area a full season of heat.
Soybeans are maturing quickly too with earliest fields dropping leaves. Stands
look tall, lush and well podded which bodes well for yield, time will tell.
People who use haylage are preparing for 4th cut. All good yields. Those making
dry hay have struggled to get 1st cut off but have decent quality from their 2nd cut.

August Weather Stats from Peter Stewart, S.E. Northumberland County
And the beat goes on. Warm and dry. The majority of our rain came on the 8th and 9th.
That is locally and south and east. Go north several Km and things are lush.
We recorded seven days at 30 or more and eight nights at 20 or more.
Locally corn on sand and knolls looks like November. Corn silage harvest moved
rapidly this week. Fourth cut hay is short, but not many opportunities to get
fourth cut hay. Bean leaf drop is well advanced. However conditions vary markedly
around the county. If you can't tell by the crops, you can tell by the washouts.
