Weather Data exchange May 2009

May Weather Data from Bill Arthur, South Perth County
April rain was 10mm short of my record but we still had 4 days in a row from
April 16-20 that were dry for field work and there was some corn planted then.
1-2 days were dry for field work May 7-8 and some pushed that to 3-4 days and
'toughed' in more corn.
May 20-26 was the next dry spell and again some started 2 days before. This spell
saw virtually all corn planted and most of soys in this area. It also gave those
who 'pushed' the land earlier a chance to rotary hoe the corn which was struggling
to get out of the ground. I do not know of any replant but there are reduced stands.
My guess is 99.9% of corn planted and 80-90% of soys
Early planted corn suffered a hard freeze May 11, 12 and again on the 18th this
left it quite yellow but it is coming along now. Some beans are peeking out. Wheat
and hay is growing well now and of course there is no shortage of moisture but
some shortage of heat. There has been more winter kill in alfalfa than we usually
see. Some wheat fields looked quite spotty but have filled in better now. Planting
date seemed to make the difference. Yields will be reduced on some fields but I do
not know of any locally that were torn up.
I do not know of any hay that has been cut but those wishing 3 or more cuts will
need to start soon, if it will quit raining.

Peter Stewart Weather Stats for S. E. Northumberland County
April rainfall was a record for us and put together with just above average for
May, leaves us wet. Heat Units were surprisingly high. The cold winds and 5
degrees last night make us feel different.
Our local supply dealer estimates that 90% of the corn is planted and 50 - 60%
of the beans. April or early May planted corn that is out of the ground is quite
yellow and some is standing in water. Some early beans are peeking out. Wheat
has finally taken off in the last week, as well as hay. And yes, there is some hay cut.
