Weather Data exchange June 2008

June Weather Data from Bill Arthur, South Perth County
June Weather Data from Bill Arthur, South Perth County
The averages are from 24 years of records.
Wet is the only word to describe June 2008
I recorded precipitation every day except 6 days and only 2 of those were in a row.
Corn; did I mention it was wet. Spraying was tricky and some fields still show lingering yellow spots from weed pressure sprayed late as well as wet places. Overall corn looks reasonably good now
Soybeans; I might have mentioned it was wet. Spraying post emerge was difficult to get it done at the right stage. Lots of fields with wheel tracks from spraying and stories about sprayers being stuck. Soy fields range from very good to poor from thin stands.
Edible beans; In case I did not mention, it was wet. There were still beans being planted into too wet ground on June 27. Those planted earlier look OK if they did not get to heavy a rain after planting. There has been some replanting.
Wheat; most looks very good, lots has been sprayed for disease and also for fusarium but if I did not mention, it was wet and sprayers ran out of time for some fields.
It will be interesting to see what the quality is like at harvest between sprayed or not fields.
Hay; Do I have to remind you ,It Was Wet! with few days in a row to cure it even haylage was tricky to get off without a shower. I doubt any dry hay has been put up with out rain and lots that was cut is too poor to use. Some is being blown back on the field. Lots of over mature hay fields waiting for better weather.
Our wish, sunny dry weather. But not too dry now.
Did not have to pick many stones this year, Too Wet!

Peter Stewart June Weather Stats for S. E. Northumberland County
Disclaimer: The rainfall amounts are only valid to within a few meters of the rain gauge! Rainfall has been extremely spotty to say the least. We were actually getting rather dry and needed a rain until the 43 mm on the 28th and another 13 on the 29th. Nearby reports were into the 75 mm range. Our largest rainfall previous to that was on the 9th and in between just 1 to 2 mm on any occasion. So in hind sight the way to do hay was to cut it and leave it out there and then bale late on the day when it was finally dry ...... if you had the nerve!
Heat units are a bit behind average, but crop development is progressing nicely. The season started early and the numbers above do not count April heat units.
The unstressed corn looks good. Some weed control has been late, and there is some ponding damage in areas, but in general not bad. Beans took a big jump after the late June rain and post emergent weed control kicked in. Most of the dairy hay wrapped up on the 27th and the beef guys are trying to get going. Some dairy 2nd cut has started, just a few days after finishing 1st. Wheat looks good and is starting to take on a yellowish hew, but is a long way from harvest.
