Weather Data exchange August 2008

August Weather Data from Bill Arthur, South Perth County
Corn and beans are all stressed locally from lack of moisture. Time will tell how
much yield impact it will have but most fields show areas of corn yellowing with
leaves fired up to and above the cob on ridges and other poor soil areas.
Lots of edible beans turning yellow and starting to drop leaves but also some
that could not get planted on time with our wet June, that are still green.
Wheat harvest wrapped up locally in the first few days of August but North Perth
and Oxford county continued to fight wet weather and were still harvesting into
the last week or so of August. Quality was mixed with some OK and others downgraded
for sprouts, fusarium, mildew and I am sure some thought of other reasons to
discount it like poor falling numbers.
4 nights below 10, 1 at 6, Brrrrrr, on the 26th but several at 10
Highest day temp was 1 day at 29
We are therefore still behind in HU but much corn was planted early so is closer to
average accumulated.
Lack of rain locally is biggest concern. I recorded precipitation on 13 days but
total only 53.5 mm and most of that was early in the month.

Peter Stewart August Weather Stats for S. E. Northumberland County
Cool and wet, but not as cool maybe as we think.
If corn was planted in April, it has more HU.
Crops look very good locally as the water does drain off these hills.
There is very little wheat left to harvest, with grades varying widely and
most of it being at least deliverable.
Corn and beans look lush and certainly are not under the same stresses as last year.
A lot of hay was harvested the last two weeks and some will be left as yields have been high.
